Enterprise/BIM Project

Goal - To enable students to experience the process of building a non-trivial database-backed web application.

Tasks

1. Choose any area that interests you - this does not necessarily have to be about business. Here are a few examples: Library system, Car rental system, Theater ticket sales system (like Ticket Master), Airline reservation system, University registration system and Inventory management system -- these are just examples and you can choose any area that interests you. You will be building an application to help manage whatever application area you have chosen.

2. Develop a project description along the lines of the three ERD review problems that I had posted earlier under "Unit 8: Database design 4". Separate the contents into numbered points. If you submit a rambling long paragraph or essay, I will not be able to go through it.

3. Develop an ER diagram for your chosen area - use Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler.

a. Your ERD needs to have at least 8 entity types and at least one of them must be an associative entity type.

b. Having a unary relationship will be a bonus, but is not essential.

c. Every integer primary key must be "autonumber"

4. After you complete the ERD and generate the schema, use the documents (not yet posted) APEX-3-creating-an-application.pdf (to be posted under unit 11), APEX-4-creating-simple-pages.pdf (to be posted under unit 11) and APEX-5-adding morefeatures.pdf to (to be posted under unit 12) complete your project.

5. Build an application in APEX (some of these points will become clear only after you have done the earlier steps):

a. You can choose any theme you like.

b. Your application should have the ability to maintain (add, modify and delete data) all your main tables (the ones which are not associative entity types). You should have at least one master-detail form described in the hands-on exercises).

c. You must use lists of values for every foreign key attribute

d. On every form, you should have user-friendly labels

e. On every form, you should display the primary key value as a display-only field.

f. I will provide instructions later on exactly what you will need to submit for the project.

Your project report should be a Word/PDF document containing the following:

1. Project description (as in the project description posted earlier)

2. The logical ER diagram for your project

3. Screenshots of all the pages of your application (be sure to have at least 3 rows of data for each entity type)

4. Workspace name, user id and password for your APEX workspace

5. Your application's name in APEX.
