1. Role play. It is the late 1600s and you are Native American. Groups of explorers, traders, missionaries and settlers have come from England, France, Spain and the Netherlands. All of them have created colonies in North America.
As a Native, how do you react to the various methods used by these Europeans to build relationships with you? Which group is most friendly, and which is most hostile to your way of life?
When answering this question consider some of the background material from previous chapters and incorporate examples from history to support you answer.
2. Given the choice to migrate to the English colonies, would you have joined the Puritans in New England or the Quakers in Pennsylvania? Explain what you like or dislike about each group, and your reasons for joining one.
3. The events of the Salem Witch Trials are a fascinating part of colonial history. After reading some of the related documents, explain what you believe to be the reason behind the hysteria.
4. After reading the chapter, do some additional reading about a specific person, place or event related to the chapter. Tell us about the topic you chose to research for this chapter: why you chose it, what you learned, and why it is important. You can post this as text, a PowerPoint, or other format. You can link to a short YouTube video clip then explain why you chose your topic and what you learned. This is your opportunity to go beyond the text and teach the class.
