Problem:
Acknowledge and respond to the following: Two examples of the five cultural paradigms in the United States include the paradigms of White European Americans and African Americans The White European American paradigm is often associated with individualism, independence, task orientation, and a future-focused perspective. In contrast, the African American paradigm frequently reflects collectivism, extended family networks, spirituality, and expressive communication styles. These comparisons describe general cultural tendencies rather than fixed traits and must be understood within the context of acculturation and subgroup diversity. Differences between these paradigms also appear in the development of racial awareness and identity. Children of color often recognize racial differences as early as ages three or four because race plays a central role in their lived experiences, whereas majority-group children may develop racial awareness later due to the normalization of whiteness in dominant culture (Diller, 2019). These differences demonstrate how both nature and environment influence identity development, community psychology, and relational dynamics within society. It is beneficial for social workers to understand the five cultural paradigms because culture shapes communication styles, help-seeking behaviors, family roles, identity formation, and perceptions of authority.
