One genetic disease that can be passed from parent to offspring is cystic fibrosis. It's a disease that affects the lungs, digestive system, and other organs. People with cystic fibrosis have thick, sticky mucus that can clog their airways and make it difficult to breathe. They may also have digestive problems and difficulty gaining weight. It's caused by a mutation in a gene called CFTR. This gene usually helps create a protein that controls the movement of salt and water in and out of cells in our bodies. When the CFTR gene is mutated, it leads to the production of thick mucus. It's a complex disease but researchers are working hard to find better treatments as well a cure one day for this disease. There are some treatment options for cystic fibrosis, such as a combination of medications, airway clearance techniques and exercise. The medications can help thin the mucus and reduce inflammation and help fight off any lung infections that may arise. As far as airway techniques, they have a device called a flutter valve that helps loosen and remove any mucus that has made it way into the lungs. People that may have this disease need to work
