Problem:
Hi Raiven,
I think Narrative Therapy was a great choice for this client. You stated that "it aims to empower the client by helping them reframe their narrative and gain a greater sense of control over their life," which I believe to be highly beneficial for this particular client considering his willingness to engage in counseling interventions. I think taking this approach can help reframe feelings of helplessness and help break generational cycles of abandonment and substance abuse especially since he has young children. Gladding (2017) notes that "through treatment, clients can reauthor their lives and change their outlooks in a positive way" (p. 194). It would allow him to begin to see that he is more than his make-up of childhood trauma and poor-decision making and that he actively can change the trajectory of his life to be fulfilling as an individual and a parent. Do you think in some instances Narrative Therapy could foster an environment for a client to avoid taking accountability for their actions, if so how might you redirect the conversation?
