Problem
In a small university town, two hospitals are trying to negotiate how to improve the health information exchange between themselves and the many physicians and other healthcare practitioners in the community. Each hospital has different EHRs, most of the physicians/providers have different EHR systems, with only some of them coordinating with one of the hospitals. The Chamber of Commerce, city and county government leaders, and the major employers have developed a task force to investigate the best HIO and processes to help improve the health of the population, streamline the continuum of care, and help reduce costs for not only the patients, but also for the medical community. The major employers also want an improvement in the efficiency of services being offered to keep insurance costs under control. The Chamber of Commerce has shown that the population is shifting to more retirees locating to the area because of the many amenities it offers. A timeline of 18 months has been established to finish this evaluation and to make recommendations for a public-private partnership to address these issue.
