Discussion

Five differences between popular and scholarly sources are

(1) popular sources are mainly available to inform and entertain their audience and often have pictures and advertisements in the material.

(2) Scholarly sources do not contain a reference list or a bibliography.

(3) Popular sources are not peer reviewed like scholarly sources, meaning they are not considered reliable or worthy of publication.

(4) Scholarly sources are written by an author that is scholarly and considered an expert in their field of study.

(5) Scholarly sources contain an abstract, introduction, methods and materials, results, discussion and reference section.

The peer-reviewed article concerning the TTIP discusses some of the challenges and strengths concerning the agreement. The author, Mr. Gantz, is an international lawyer that is well versed in the current situation of the international trade agreement and how changes to it will affect member economies, so the information is reliable.

The author lists many references for the research and the article is peer-reviewed which gives a strong view on the issue. I did not see any biases in the article, but the limitation is that even though they are experts in their field, this is a new agreement and it is impossible to know the outcome until years into the program.

The popular article is from The Guardian newspaper or of the UK. The bias is obvious, the UK does not want to be part of the TTIP because it feels it will reduce food and human safety. The limitations from the article is that it is only from the authors point of view and beliefs and does not support any of their facts with references.

Therefore, there or no strengths and the article is not reliable.

Five visual cues were (1) the scholarly article contained no pics or advertisements. (2) it had a reference list (3) the article had and introduction, materials used and discussion section (4) in text citations and (5) had the authors credentials.
