Functions of Stomata

The cuticle forms outermost surface of the leaf and offers resistance to the evaporation of water vapour and entry of carbon dioxide necessary for photosynthesis. Stomata perform the following main functions:

  • They allow entry of CO2 necessary for photosynthesis
  • They control water loss through transpiration and thus protect the plant from desiccation,
  • At higher temperature (above 35°C) they promote transpiration which serves to cool the leaves.
