For your second essay you will be writing a rebuttal to one

Essay #2- The Rebuttal Argument

1200+ Words

For your second essay, you will be writing a Rebuttal to one of the essays in Chapter 26-Privacy.

Your essay will either challenge the assumptions underlying the article's claim OR challenge the evidence presented.

Step 1: Select an article: You must pick your article from Chapter 26 (pg 465-499) in Good Reasons.

Step 2: Analyze the article carefully:

• What are the primary claims the author makes?
• What evidence does the author have for making those claims

• What are the underlying (often unspoken) assumptions about the evidence?

Step 3: Use the Opposing Viewpoints Database in the PGCC library to research the topic: Your goal is to find more information about the claims or evidence the author has made.

Step 4: Select 2-3 sources from the Opposing Viewpoints Database
• Summarize the sources

• Select important quotes or passages that refute (oppose) the original article's argument

Step 5: Outline and Draft your essay: Use the 2 sources from Opposing Viewpoints as evidence that your rebuttal is sound.

Step 6: Revise, Edit, and Proofread carefully

Your essay must use TWO sources in addition to the article from our textbook. You may not use any general internet sources; all sources must come from Opposing Viewpoints unless you have received written permission from the professor.

Essays must be submitted to Blackboard by 5pm on the Sunday they are due.

All essays may be submitted to plagiarism detection software. Essays that use words or ideas without proper citation will receive failing grades and may be reported to the college.
