For your project you are to create a system in a fashion

Problem Solving

For your project, you are to create a system in a fashion similar to those outlined in the examples in your textbook and through handouts in class. You may design one of the following types of systems:

• Object oriented system
• Procedural system

The Athletic Department at a local college would like to track both practice time and academic hours completed by each athlete. For example, each athlete must be able to input the practice hours they have completed. This may include both mandatory practices and optional practice time such as strength training, additional running etc. Athletes must also be able to track all academic hours. This includes hours spent in class, required study hours, tutoring hours and any additional hours they independently spend studying. The goal is to determine how much time a college athlete spends with athletics and academics. It is also meant to be a time management tool so that student athletes, coaches and the Athletic Director can better follow the progress of each student athlete. Additionally, because of new NCAA regulations, the college must be able to provide accurate information to the Athletic Conference about the students pertaining to their athletic and academic hours. As part of your internship experience, the Director of Athletics and the Director of Information Technology have asked you to design a system that meets the basic guidelines outlined above. You will be required to think through the requirements of this system from the perspective of the user(s).

There are three parts to this project:

1. Document the questions that are necessary for you to gain an understanding of the system you are designing. The questions should give me insight into your thought process.

2. Analyze and design the system based on the requirements given. You will not actually create the system. Your project submissions will differ based on the type of system that you choose to develop and whether you complete the project individually or as a team. You must complete a minimum of 4 of the 6 requirements listed for either the Procedural or Object Oriented System if you are completing the assignment individually. If you are completing the assignment as a team, you must complete all 6 requirements. Additionally, the level of work expected increases if you complete the project as a team.

3. All of your work must be completed in a professional manner, as if you were submitting the design to the Director of IT and the Director of Athletics (no hand drawn screen designs or flowcharts for example). For any interactive component, be sure to follow all of the guidelines as discussed in class. I am most concerned about how well you thought out your system design. Focus on the user. I will expect innovation in your design - do not simply replicate the examples we have covered in class. If you do not have enough information about the system, you may make assumptions, but be sure to document those assumptions.

Requirements for a procedural system include:

• Screen Design (that indicates how you envision the user input component of the system)
• Structure Chart
• IPO Chart
• Flowcharts (complete for a minimum of 2 output reports - this may not be eliminated)
• Output Report Layouts
• Use Case (or other UML) diagrams

Requirements for an Object Oriented System include:

• Output and Input Requirements Chart
• User Interface Design Screen Design
• Class Properties and Function Chart or Class Diagram
• Storyboard
• Object Dictionary Form
• Use Case (or other UML) diagrams

As stated above, you have the option to complete the project individually or as a team. The team must be no more than two students and expectations are higher if you complete the project as a team. You may choose either type of system for your design.
