Crucible Act -
For this Apply, expand on the answer you wrote for #5 in your After Reading activities. Write a one-paragraph analysis of Reverend Parris's character. Think about the following:
- What does Reverend Parris do in this Act?
- What does he say?
- What are his concerns for his daughter?
- What are his concerns for himself?
Your analysis should describe Parris' character. Your audience should be a fellow student in the class who has read Act 1 but hasn't thought much about what kind of personality Reverend Parris displays. Use at least two quotes from Act 1 to support your analysis.
Recognize verbal irony. Verbal irony occurs when someone states one thing and means another. According to stage directions, Abigail draws the sobbing, repentant Mary to her side "out of her infinite charity" (lines 1136-1137). Why is this comment ironic?
