Problem:
Focus on legal and ethical issues.
In your text, Teaching in Nursing, the authors talk about student academic performance and legal/ethical issues in nursing education. Read the case scenario below and respond scribe a paper responding to the situation. Use APA 7th ed format, scribe a paper and discuss the issues identified in the questions as well as any concerning issues you see that may arise out of the situation. Support your responses with scholarly references.
A new faculty member is teaching a Med/Surg 1 nursing course and several students in the class are failing the course. One day in class towards the end of the semester, the faculty member announced that the students who were failing the course may scribe a paper to bring their grade up to a 78, which would be passing. A student who was passing the class raised their hand and asked if they could scribe the paper to bring their grade up, and the faculty member responded that they were already passing the class, they did not need the points.
As you answer the questions below, consider the situation from the perspective of the faculty member, the students who were failing, the students who were passing, and for future faculty members who will have these students in class. Apply the content (legal, ethical, grievances, fairness, etc.) in this week's reading in your writing and address the following questions with supported sources as well:
What, if anything, was right in this situation?
Can the faculty member change the grading criteria during the semester?
Is the syllabus, which identifies the course requirements, a contract with the students that can or cannot be changed?
Can a faculty member justify assigning multiple grades to one assignment (not everyone has the same failing score)? Need Assignment Help?
Is it ethical to refuse all students the same opportunity to raise their grade, passing or not?
Identify the potential consequences in the situation and support your responses with scholarly references.
