Question 1. Analyzing the Opposition

After exploring the opposition, it is also important to analyze the opposition. You need to analyze the author's position and provide your position on the article.

Assessment Directions:

Find three articles-primary and secondary sources-from the ITT Tech Virtual Library that argue for the opposite side of your position. You may use the article that you post in the forum as one of these.

In this analysis, write a minimum of three paragraphs of about 200 words each for a total of at least 550- to 600-words for the whole assignment. For each article:

List the article in APA format to practice citing sources in APA format.

Summarize the article in 2-3 sentences.

Analyze if there is any validity to the author's position in 2-3 sentences. You can say something like, "Although I disagree, this position makes sense because (and give a few reasons here)."

Explain if and how this opposition article helps you to understand your own position on the topic.

Submission Requirements:

Submit your responses for grading in a Microsoft Word document.

Adhere to Standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation requirements.

Use 12-point Arial font and double-space.

Question 2. Cost-Minimization Models

Solve the following linear programming model by using Microsoft Excel:

minimize Z = 3x1 + 6x2

subject to

7x1 + 3x2 ≥ 40

x1, x2 ≥ 0 and integer

A jeweler and her apprentice make silver pins and necklaces by hand. Each week, they have 80 hours of labor and 36 ounces of silver available. It requires 8 hours of labor and 2 ounces of silver to make a pin and 10 hours of labor and 6 ounces of silver to make a necklace. Each pin also contains a small gem of some kind. The demand for pins is no more than six per week. A pin earns the jeweler $400 in profit, and a necklace earns $100. The jeweler wants to know how many of each item to make each week to maximize profit.

Formulate an integer programming model for this problem.

Solve the linear programming model that you formulated.

Compare this solution with the solution without integer restrictions and indicate whether the rounded-down solution would have been optimal.

Submission Requirements:

Submit your response in a Microsoft Excel workbook.

Show the detailed steps that you performed to solve the problem.

Project Introduction:

In the course project, students will write an 8- to 10-page research paper on their chosen position statement. These pages do not include the cover page, reference page, and table of contents page. Students are expected to choose a problem, justify their choice, analyze and explain three solutions for the problem, and reflect on how they will use critical and creative thinking to write this paper and find solutions to this problem.

Course Learning Objectives Tested:

1. Describe how creative thinking and critical thinking are applied to daily situations.

2. Evaluate the critical elements of a source document.

3. Critically analyze and summarize complex documents.

4. Participate in a collaborative writing process.

5. Synthesize information from multiple source documents.

6. Use primary and secondary research sources to support analysis.

7. Apply creative thinking to propose a set of solutions to a problem.

8. Apply critical thinking to select a viable and innovative solution to a problem or issue.

9. Create a research document intended to persuade an audience to support a position on an issue or a solution to a problem.

10. Critically evaluate peers' work with respect to a standard rubric.
