Find the direct cost of proposed earthmoving operation

Problem

A crawler dozer with a universal blade is to be used in a slot-dozing operation. The material is a dry, noncohesive silty sand, and is to he moved a distance of 350 ft from the beginning of the cut. The dozing is downhill on a 10% grade. The operator will have average skill, the dozer has a power-shift transm

ission, and both visibility and traction are assumed to be satisfactory. The material weighs 108 pcf in the bank state, and will swell 10% when excavated by dozing. Job efficiency is assumed to be equivalent to a 50-min hour.

a. Assuming a Caterpillar D8 is used, calculate the direct cost of the proposed earth moving operation in dollars per bcy. The OW cost for the dozer is $64.80 per hour and the operator's wage is $10.85 per hour plus 36% for fringes.

b. Assuming that a CAT 834 wheel-type dozer with a straight blade is substituted for the D8, calculate the direct cost of the proposed earthmoving operation in dollars per bcy. (The 834 has 58% more flywheel horsepower than the D8.) The O&O cost for the 834 is $69.95 per hour, all other conditions of the job are unchanged.

The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
