Material needed:-
1. Patrick Baert, "Unintended Consequences: a typology and examples" International Sociology Vol. 6 No. 2 pp 201-210 (e-article available through library)
2. Positive and negative examples of unintended consequences. Edward Tenner Ted Talk Transcript https://www.ted.com/talks/edward_tenner_unintended_consequences/transcript?language=en
3. Technology 1: Find one example of a "modern" technology that has produced unintended consequences (positive or negative or neutral).
4. Technology 2: Find one example of a new developing technology that hasn't yet produced unintended consequences.
Individual Part
Write a paper describing the two technologies that you found. The paper should explain how each technology works. It should also explain the unintended consequence(s) of Technology 1. The paper should then consider possible unintended consequences that could arise from Technology 2.
Structure of the paper:
Page 1: Title page with name and student number.
Page 2: Description of how Technology 1 is supposed to work
Page 3: Description of how Technology 2 is supposed to work
Page 4: Description of one important unintended consequence of Technology 1
Pages 5-6: Prediction of unintended consequences of Technology 2
Page 7: References page
Page 8 and beyond: Any appendices containing supporting information (graphs, charts, ...) that you use.
The paper should be double-spaced, 11-to 12 point font.
