Assignment -

Question: Using no fewer than ten (10) tenant from Luana's book, argue the inclusion of the Black Aesthetic in the work of any artist in any genre.

As an argument, this essay should take a position that will be stated in the thesis. Find an issue that is argumentative concerning the artist, genre or focus of your essay. Find "your dog in the fight" regarding the subject of your essay and argue that point while identifying the tenants of the Black Aesthetic employed by or used in the work. The essay must be written in third person (except where you discuss a family member-even then 1st person should not be used without warrant. Any rhetorical mode or combination of rhetorical modes may be used to develop your essay. To complete the requirements for an argumentative essay, be sure the language of your essay is concrete, specific, and in keeping with an essay that takes a position or chooses a side. In addition, the essay should follow the paragraph organization reviewed in class and listed below:

1. Essay Opening

A. Paragraph 1- Introduction - Sets the tone and provides the general topic of the essay.

Paragraph 2- Thesis Location - Narrows the focus of the essay

2. Thesis location

a. Thesis statement is 1-2 sentences only.

b. Expresses your position on the topic.

c. Thesis need not be at the end of the paragraph

3. Must be a fully developed paragraph

Essay Body -

A Counter Argument expressing the voice of the opposition must be provided.

1. An Antithesis-opposite opinion.

2. Other reasons for consideration.

3. Be sure to return to the thesis before leaving this paragraph.

B. Body Paragraphs - Elements in bold face must be present in all body paragraphs

1. Topic Sentence (T-S)

a. States the focus of the paragraph.

b. Provides Unity: connection between the T-S and Thesis

2. Coherence. Provides cohesive flow in the argument:

a. Adequate discussion of the paragraph topic must be provided. Provide reasoning (sub topics) for your statements and ideas.

b. All sentences must flow logically from one to the next.

c. Provides connection between the quotation and the T-S of each paragraph.

3. Support

a. Provides evidence for or illustration of the paragraph topic. b. Each paragraph, except for the essay opening and the conclusion, must be supported by significant details (quotations).

c. All quotations must be Documented with MLA in-text documentation.

4. Paragraph Conclusion

a. Restates the focus of the paragraph.

5. Transition.

a. Transition to the next paragraph must be provided, either at the end

III. Essay Conclusion of a paragraph or the beginning of the next.

1. Restates and embellishes upon the thesis.

B. Works Cited.

1. Provides documentation of Support.

2. A typed Works Cited page is required.

Essay length is 8-9 pages. Ten sources, five of which must be a hard source, are required. Wiki's and blogs are never allowed as sources. Essays must be composed in Times New Roman or Calibri 12 font.
