Problem

1. A constant-pressure piston/cylinder has 1 kg of saturated liquid water at 100 kPa. A rigid tank contains air at 1000 K, 1000 kPa. They are now thermally connected by conduction through the walls cooling the air tank and bringing the water to saturated vapor. Find the required amount of air and the irreversibility of the process, assuming no external heat transfer.

2. The automatic transmission in a car receives 25 kW of shaft work and gives out 23 kW to the drive shaft. The balance is dissipated in the hydraulic fluid and metal casing, all at 45oC, which in turn transmit it to the outer atmosphere at 20oC. Find all the exergy transfer rates.
