Final Dissertation:
Before writing the dissertation, take some time to plan its overall structure. Draft the executive summary to get an overview (you can always come back to it and revise it at the end) and map the approach for each section of the dissertation - for example, noting the main and sub-headings. Each section should have its own internal structure and logical progression from its introduction to its concluding summary.
Write the first draft just as it comes. Do not get "hung up" over every word or sentence, but try to build up a flow based on your planned structure. When you have completed a first draft, go back carefully through it and edit it - this time reading it through the eyes of another person (your supervisor, perhaps). At this stage, you need to pay particular attention to any ambiguities in meaning and ensure the logical flow of the argument. Are you clearly bringing out the points you intend? You may also need someone else to proof read your work at this stage to check for grammar and spelling.
Check also that:
¨ there is sufficient depth of critical analysis; and
¨ the dissertation is properly and appropriately referenced in the text and that the bibliography is both full and correctly expressed.
Once you have completed this re-draft, you should be ready to submit it to your tutor for initial consideration and feedback. Any comments will need to be taken into account in finalising the dissertation before its submission for assessment.
