Fertilization is the fusion of the two gametes (sperm and ovum) to produce a zygote which develops into the new individual with a genetic heritage derived from both the parents. Strictly speaking, fertilization can be splitted into the fusion of the cells (plasmogamy) and the fusion of nuclei (karyogamy).
