federal agents provided only the basic

Federal agents provided only the basic necessities on reservations so that Native people would be forced to live an agricultural life or starve, despite the fact that much reservation land was not suitable for farming or agriculture. Federal agents changed the curriculum in reservation schools, as well as boarding schools, to force Native children to speak English, dress like white children, and see their traditional languages, customs and history as bad and uncivilized. The Supreme Court ruled that Congress could NOT supersede or annul treaties made with Native nations or tribes, thus providing government protection for Native groups to remain on their ancestral homelands. BIA agents outlaws Native customs they considered "savage," such as the Sun Dance of the Plains Indians or the Pueblo rituals.
