Problem: Fat metabolism plays an important role in aerobic training by breaking down fatty acids into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to generate energy for muscle contraction through beta-oxidation. When the dietary fat intake is reduced, the body is forced to break down stored adipose tissue for energy. However, fat metabolism is a more complex process compared to carbohydrate metabolism. Consequently, the body must go through extra steps in obtain ATP, which can cause feelings of early fatigue. (Debasis Bagchi et al., 2019) Low-fat diet may affect how the body chooses its energy metabolism. With low availability of dietary fat, the body tends to rely on carbohydrates as its primary fuel source, leading to biochemical adaptations that result in earlier crossover points, where the body shifts from utilizing fat to carbohydrates. As dietary fat decreases, the reliance on carbohydrates as the primary fuel source leads higher respiratory exchange ratio (RER) values during exercise, reflecting a greater use of carbohydrate. The Cori cycle also helps manage lactate accumulation by recycling lactate back to glucose, which supports continued performance. Fats also play a crucial role in hormone balance, including the regulation of steroid hormones, insulin, and cortisol all of which are essential for recovery, overall health, and energy levels.
