Family systems theories like Bowenian, structural, and strategic approaches help counselors understand development by focusing on relationships instead of just one individual. Bowen family systems theory is especially useful for understanding how patterns carry across generations. Concepts like differentiation of self and emotional triangles show how family stress and unresolved issues can impact a person over time (Brown & Errington, 2024; Murdock, 2025). This helps counselors recognize that what someone is experiencing now may be connected to patterns that have existed within the family for years.

Structural family therapy focuses more on how the family is organized, including roles, boundaries, and authority. Development can be affected when the family structure does not adjust as children grow, or when boundaries are either too rigid or too loose. For example, unclear parental roles can lead to confusion and behavioral issues in children (Issitt, 2026; Murdock, 2025). In this approach, counselors work to help families create a healthier structure and more balance.

Strategic family therapy focuses on what is happening in the present and how certain behaviors are being reinforced. Instead of digging deeply into the past, it looks at patterns that keep the problem going. Counselors use direct strategies to interrupt those patterns and help families try new ways of interacting (Dykeman, 2022; Murdock, 2025). These approaches encourage counselors to look at the bigger picture and understand how family dynamics shape development across the lifespan. Need Assignment Help?
