Familiar with hypothesis testing in general

A political science department surveyed those graduating in the major to see whether they were going on to graduate school in the same proportions as those from similar colleges. They reported their conclusion as follows: "Compared to those from similar colleges, far fewer of our students are going on to graduate school in political science, more of our students are going on to graduate school in other fields, and fewer of our students are not going on to graduate school at all: ?2 (2, N = 275) = 13.24, p < .01."

Explain this result to a person who is familiar with hypothesis testing in general, such as with the t test for independent means, but knows nothing about chi-square tests.
