Eye Drops

Medication is instilled in the form of drops or ointment.  

Purpose

1. To dilate pupil e.g. Atropine 1 per cent, drosyn 5 per cent or 10 per cent 
2. To constrict the pupil e,g. Pilocarpine 0.5 per cent. 
3. To prevent or control infection e.g. antibiotic chloromyetcine ointment. 
4. To lubricate eye ball e.g. caster oil or paraffin. 
5. Prior to examination of the cornea e.g. flouresicin 2 per cent. 
6. To induce local anaesthesia prior to removal of foreign body e.g. cocaine hydrochloride. 
7. To reduce inflammatory response e.g. Sofracord Hydrocortisone eye ointment.
