In an extraction of benzoic acid from a three part mixture containing benzoic acid, methyl orange (and previously cellulose). Why would the top layer of liquid in the separatory funnel be clear if it is supposed to contain the methyl orange in ether? The bottom layer contains water and sodioum benzoate.
