Extended Definition of Prejudice
Write an extended definition paragraph of one of the following terms from page 357 in your Bedford textbook. Know your purpose, so that you can define the term as clearly and objectively as possible. Give your readers a reason to read, by introducing your subject as it has previously been used, misused, misunderstood; then, offer a new or better interpretation of the term of the subject. Keep your audience in mind to anticipate and avoid problems of clarity. Imagining your audience as you write will help you make your definition effective because it is clear not only to you, but also those unfamiliar with the term or concept under discussion. Use as many strategies in Chapter 19 to clarify your definition. Be sure to decide which methods work best, which should receive the most emphasis, and in which order the chosen methods of definition should appear. For example, you may find utilizing examples to be the best way to begin your essay and engage your reader. Causes and effects, on the other hand, may make up most of the body of your essay.
