Studying the history of psychology has deepened my understanding and appreciation for the field, as well as, exploring the history of psychology, which has illuminated how theoretical paradigms emerge in response to the evolving understanding of human behavior and mental life. From Wundt's experimental introspection to the humanistic and cognitive revolutions, each movement revealed not only advancement, but also conceptual omissions that shaped how psychologists define and measure mental phenomena (Schultz & Schultz, 2016). Historical perspectives, from introspectionism to behaviorism and cognitive science, sensitized me to the layered causes of behavior (social, biological, cultural, and historical), which in turn led me to formulate research questions. This historical grounding shaped my research question: How do environmental adversity and perceived social support influence resilience and motivation in middle-school children from underprivileged backgrounds?
Despite extensive research on resilience, much of it centers on adults or clinical populations, leaving a gap in understanding how these processes develop in early adolescence, a critical period for identity and academic engagement (Schultz & Schultz, 2016). My aim is to explore culturally responsive and strengths-based frameworks that address this oversight. Recent work by Masten and Barnes (2018) reinforces this direction by emphasizing the need for developmental, contextually grounded studies of resilience in diverse youth populations.
