Exploring the different models of evidence-based practice is essential to the furtherment of education and information on a topic. From the 19th century with Florence Nightingale to now, the evolution of EBP has proven to be a very necessary aspect to many of the ideas that have come to fruition in the sense of psychology research efforts. The three specific EBP models presented in Chapter 14 of the textbook consisted of; The 3 Circle Model of EBP Clinical Decisions, The Ace Model of Knowledge Transformation, and the Iowa Model of Practice to Promote Quality Care and Transdisciplinary Model of EBP. All three of these have various promising aspects to them however with respect to my goals, I chose the 3 Circle Model and the Iowa Model.
The 3 Circle Model specifically spoke to me through the way that it honors the client or patient most directly. Oftentimes in medical decisions or even mental health decisions there is a lack of empathy given to the individual going through it. This model allows for 4 specific ideas to be at the forefront of the work that is completed. These include; Clinical expertise, Research evidence, Patient values/preferences, and Decision making in the middle of it all. (Hall & Roussel, 2020) This encompasses the idea that all of the subjects should come together in the end to best support the person needing the resources. There are clear benefits to this EBP being utilized if done correctly and this could include improved client outcomes, increased overall structure of expectations, and a higher level of client centered care based on the information that can be gained from such a personable experience. This EBP prioritizes integration and inclusion while combating the overshadowing the important individuals who need to be represented.
The Iowa Model of Practice to Promote Quality Care and Transdisciplinary Model of EBP promotes improvement of quality of care. I associate with this one as well because in any realm that I work in, the big goal will be to always improve client care to the best of my ability and this could play a large role in that. Hall and Roussel laid out the nine steps necessary to ensure that the improvements can happen with the assistance of all involved. Although the steps seem rather "simple", to have these laid out and the expectations on the table before conversations even begin about improvements allows for ideas to flow more freely based on the lack of necessity to pay attention to the navigation.
These two both equally have the client/ patient as the forefront of the interest in the work being done for them. With this said, they do not both only have positive qualities, both have the ability to fail or not produce results in the expected way. For the 3 Circle Model specifically, it is very possible that some of the clinical expertise or research evidence could not be available which would not allow the continuum to happen. Patient values and preferences should remain at the forefront to every decision however without proper channels for this to happen and be communicated in an appropriate and timely way is the challenge. As for the Iowa Model, there is a possibility for people in a workplace to begin acting out when this is implemented specifically because there are likely different expectations. In addition to this, there is a small amount of true research looking into why this EBP specifically was included. Based on this finding, I would associate the most with the 3 Circle Model of EBP for my specific interest in forensic psychology. I feel that this model would provide clear expectations while also allowing clinicians and techs to communicate with them on their own level within reason because that is harm reduction and de-escalation at times.
