Explanation for inheritance of kernel colour

A homozygous strain of the corn which produces yellow kernels is crossed with another homozygous strain which generates purple kernels. When the F1 are interbred, 290 of F2 are yellow and 70 are purple.

a. If kernel colour is controlled by the single gene pair with the yellow dominant to purple, what would be the anticipated ratio of yellow to purple in F2?

b. Do the observed data differ radically from the expected in? a) Discuss your answer (use a chi square test).

c. Give an alternative explanation for inheritance of kernel colour and evaluate it by comparing observed data to which expected from your alternative hypothesis.
