CLASSMATE'S POST:

One project that I consider to be successful was lobbying for my son to receive Otoplasty (ear pinning), which my insurance did not cover because it was considered plastic surgery. At the time he was eight years old. To initiate this process, it was important for me to have evidence to present to the insurance company to why the procedure was necessary. To explain, my son had protruding ears that caused severe self-esteem issues as well as relentless teasing from his peers. The planning occurred when I did my research on the effects of lack of self-esteem, and behavioral issues associated with brutal teasing. I determined that his issues were serious enough in that his behavior caused him to act out in school daily and more importantly, have thoughts of hurting himself. The plan was executed when I wrote a four page letter to the insurance company explaining the effects of relentless teasing and lack of self esteem my son had, and the fact that I felt he could harm himself because of it. Additionally, in executing my project, it was important to make clear to the insurance company that this procedure was by no means a cosmetic procedure for vanity, but a procedure necessary to assist a young man change his appearance because he was born with abnormally large protruding ears. In monitoring the project, I checked mail deliveries, phone messages for feed back from the insurance company, and called to ensure that the process was taken into consideration. In closing, the insurance company agreed that the procedure was necessary and not considered cosmetic, and the insurance company paid for the procedure with no out of pocket costs to us. After the procedure, my son's life changed dramatically in that he gained self esteem, was delighted with his new appearance, and his behavior improved because he no longer had to act out to detract attention from his ears.
