FPSY 4920: Forensic Psychology Capstone Capstone Project Comprehensive Report

For the Capstone Project, you create a Comprehensive Report that summarizes your deep understanding of a case from the perspective of a forensic psychology professional.

You will be assigned a case in which you determine the mental state of a defendant as well as juror characteristics that would be beneficial or detrimental to the defendant.

You analyze the diagnostic criteria of the defendant's mental disorder and you examine the roles of those who will implement a treatment plan for this mental disorder in a correctional setting.

You then prepare a preliminary Presentation of Findings for your colleagues to review and provide constructive criticism. You integrate instructor and colleague feedback into the final submission of your Capstone Project Comprehensive Report.

Capstone Project Comprehensive Report

8-16 pages: Not including title page, references and the 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation in Section 5

The sections of your Capstone Project Comprehensive Report will be submitted as the Application Assignments, one per week. You will receive feedback from your instructor on each section.

In Week 5, you will receive feedback on your Presentation of Findings from your instructor and your colleagues.

The feedback you receive should be integrated into each section of your Capstone Project Comprehensive Report prior to the final submission in Week 6 as a requirement of your project.

Your Capstone Project Comprehensive Report must include the following elements: Section 1: Evaluating the Defendant's Competency to

Stand Trial (2-4 pages)

• State what the defendant is being charged with (e.g. Felony Theft).

• Explain your determination of whether or not the defendant appears to meet the standards for adjudicative competence.

• Describe what you needed to know to make this determination.

• Describe some of the challenges in determining adjudicative competence.

Section 2: Assisting with Jury Selection (2-4 pages)

• State what the defendant is being charged with (e.g., Felony Theft).

• Describe juror characteristics you think would be significant to your defendant's case.

• Describe two jurors you would select for the prosecution's case.

• Explain how the same two jurors you described (that you would select for the prosecution's case) could impact the defense's case.

• Describe other factors that would be important to know about these jurors to help determine their potential effect on the case.

Section 3: Mental Disorders (2-4 pages)

• State what the defendant is being charged with (e.g., Felony Theft).

• State the defendant's mental diagnosis (e.g., Schizophrenia).

• Describe the diagnostic criteria of the defendant's mental disorder.

• Explain other information you think the judge and jury should know about the defendant's mental disorder.

Section 4: Implementing Treatment Plans in a Correctional Setting (2-4 pages)

• State the crime of the individual convicted (e.g., Felony Theft).

• State the individual's mental diagnosis (e.g., Schizophrenia).

• Describe the role of a forensic psychologist in a correctional setting with this individual.

• Based on the mental disorder, explain what might be included in the individual's treatment plan.

• Beyond the forensic psychologist, explain who else might be involved with the implementation of the treatment plan, and in what way would they be involved.

Section 5: Presentation of Findings

Prepare a 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation that summarizes the following about your assigned case:

• Background and diagnosis of the defendant in your assigned case.

• Determination of the defendant's competency to stand trial.

• Selection of two potential jurors for the defendant's trial.

• Presentation of diagnostic criteria for the defendant's mental disorder.

• Description of a possible treatment plan, based on the mental disorder, for the convicted individual. Description of roles of those involved with implementing the treatment plan within the correctional setting.

This presentation is a high level summary of your main points. It should include concise, clear language. In each slide, present a key finding with supporting commentary presented in the Notes section below the slide. Make use of bullets, tables, and other formats to ensure you are presenting the necessary information clearly and succinctly.

Although the Capstone Project Comprehensive Report is not to be submitted until Week 6, Day 7, you should become familiar with the project requirements and have them in mind as you proceed through the course. The Discussions and Application Assignments relate to and can be of use to your Capstone Project Comprehensive Report.
