Explain ways us government and business owners reacted

Problem: In 1886, a group of anarchists were put on trial in Chicago after a bomb was thrown, presumably at the police, during a workers' assembly in Haymarket Square. The anarchists had been fighting for workers' rights for many years up to that point, but they, and many other, similar activists, failed to make significant gains. Workers had attempted to organize, but they met resistance in many forms. Please explain the ways the US government and business owners reacted to workers' demands for better conditions, better pay, and fewer hours before this pivotal event.
