For purposes of paper, imagine the following: As a Federal Public Defender you are assigned a case where your client, John Smith, an American citizen, is arrested and indicted for treason and sedition for supporting ISIS. Smith has demonstrated his support by flying an ISIS flag in front of his house, publicly endorsing and supporting ISIS, visiting ISIS websites to contribute money, expressing his hatred toward the United States and his desire to establish an Islamic caliphate in the U.S., and dressing like an ISIS soldier. As a Public Defender, you have no choice but to accept Mr. Smith as your client and defend him to the best of your ability even if you strongly disagree with him. How would you handle Mr. Smith's case? Would it make a difference in your defense strategy if the government added a charge related to a violation of the Patriot Act?
