Explain the term- Zener Breakdown

Under a very high reverse voltage, depletion region expands and potential barrier increases resulting in a very high electric field (3X107 V/m) across the junction. Electric field would break some of the covalent bonds of semiconductor reverse current. This is known as Zener effect. Breakdown occurs at a particular and constant value of reverse voltage known as the breakdown voltage.
