OBJECTIVES - At the end of this assignment, the student should be able to:
- Explain the ICD-10-CM coding system.
- Discuss the current status of implementation of the ICD-10-CM coding system in the United States.
Overview
ICD-10 was implemented in 1994 by WHO member states. The National Center for Health Statistics is responsible for developing ICD-10-CM, a modification that will be implemented in the United States. This assignment will familiarize the student with the status of adoption of ICD-10-CM in the United States.
Instructions
1. Using an Internet browser (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome), go to www.cdc.gov.
2. Review the information found on the website regarding ICD-10-CM.
3. Go to www.AHIMA.org. Search on ICD-10-CM for additional information on ICD-10-CM.
4. Prepare a one-page summary of information about ICD-10-CM.
