Problem
A. Demonstrate understanding of the various meanings attached to the term violence; and, be able to define realism (as applied to warfare), pacifism, just war theory, and noncombatant immunity.
B. Know the traditional requirements for prosecuting a just war; and, explain the difference between a preventive and preemptive war.
C. Be able to show how a just war theorist might apply the theory to a modern war such as the war in Iraq or that in Afghanistan.
D. Know the most common arguments concerning whether terrorist actions can ever be morally justified.
E. Identify and explain how consequentialist and nonconsequentialist theories apply to war and peace, terrorism, and torture.
