Explain the controversy or problem as you understand it

Problem

Write a solution proposal. Explain the problem and your proposal to solve that problem. Argue directly for the effectiveness of your solution.

1. Introduction: Directly address your audience (your opposition). Explain the controversy or problem, as you understand it. Establish common ground between your perspectives. End with a thesis that states your solution.

2. Proposal: Explain the steps of your solution. What, specifically, do we need to do to solve this problem? Why will your solution work? How is your solution feasible? Be specific here and support your claims with examples and evidence.

3. Counterargument: Examine your opposition's main arguments and refute them. Directly address their claims and positions on the issue that are counter to your solution, and then argue against those claims. Give direct support for your rebuttal arguments.

4. Conclusion: Synthesize your main arguments. Re-establish common ground, and let your reader know what you want them to do, think, or feel after reading your essay. What are your reader's next steps?
