what I wrote
This reminds me a little of the chicken or the egg question.It is hard to say because in some cases, one causes the other. For instance, someone who currently has a mental illness, whether aware or not, may turn to substanc es to self medicate, which in turn, causes a mental addiction (because it seemed to help temporarily) and physical addiction because the body now believes it needs it to be normal. Conversly, those who have an addiction first can devekop a mental illness from it because of the manner in which it restructures the brain and changes how receptors receive information and the pathways alter so dormant illnesses may have "ignited".
