Instructions for Country Assignment
We know that plurality is a concept very relevant to communication. With globalization of business, we must learn to understand multiple perspectives so that our communication is appropriate and accomplishes ourgoals instead of getting in our way. It is very easy to misunderstand words and behaviors in cultures that are notour own, and it is easy to make false attributions about people when we don't understand them.
For your country assignment, I want you to do some research and identify ANYTHING YOU CAN FIND that might affect our ability to communicate as we try to do business in other countries. What do we need to know to avoid being misunderstood or misunderstandingothers. (The State Department website is a good one to use because the information is credible.) Verbal and non-verbal differences are, of course, important, but try to think creatively. There are rules about how we interact with each other that can affect the perception we develop of each other which then can affect our communication. For example, chronemics, proxemics, and haptics can be as important as kinesics. (Look them up if you don't know whatthese words mean!).
Prepare a brief summary-two pages or so - explaining what you have discovered. Thinkabout this as if you were explaining to your boss what he/she needs to know when they travel to your country. It should be written with a proper introduction, body, and conclusion. It should be double-spaced and thoroughly proofread for grammatical and spelling errors.
Be prepared to give a 2-3 minute summary of the most important things you learned. We don't have time for a longer presentation, but I want you to be professional as well as succinct. I suggest you practice rather than "winging it,"
