Assignment: Business Information systems- Data Management Project: Winter Olympics 1992 - 2014

Business Scenario: You have been hired by a committee to perform data management of a subset of Winter Olympics data from 1992 to 2014.

Task 1: General Data management

A. Refer to Workshop 3.

B. Write a simple data dictionary for this data file. Explain the benefit of data dictionaries and documentation in your own words.

C. Under the file menu, chose info and note the metadata (file size, date saved, author, etc.)

D. Write a few lines on the type of database this is, the type of query language you could use to search the data and where you could store the data.

E. Refer to workshop 4. What sort of analyst could you get to help you with the analysis of this data?

Task 2: Analysis & Interpretation

A. Recall the work you did.

B. Find the maximum and minimum age of all of the athletes listed in the database.

C. Put a filter on the country of origin.

D. Illustrate some of the events in which Canada won Gold medals by

a. Filter out countries so you are left with Canada,
b. Cut and paste the data to another spreadsheet,
c. Then place a filter on Medal Rank and filter out the rankings so that you are left with 1s.
d. Write an extensive paragraph on the sports involved, e.g. Ice hockey, etc., events and age of the athletes involved.
E. Repeat the exercise in Part D for Austria.

Task 3: Transforming Data

A. Recall workshop 8

B. Consider the first three lines of the data set "Data_for_BUS105_Assessment3.xlsx"

C. Rewrite the first three line in column-oriented format

Task 4: Unstructured data

A. Describe the challenges and benefits of unstructured data.

B. Suppose that you are required to collect unstructured data about the athletes.

C. Provide three different examples of the data that would be collected. For example, an mp4 file of the German slalom team chatting.

Task 5: Generation and recommendations

A. Provide practical recommendations regarding other structured data which could be collected, i.e. time sports event started and ended.

Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:

1. The answer should be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.

2. The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

3. Also include a reference page. The Citations and references should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
