On the surface, Zen Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism in Japan are very different. In East Asia, there is a long tradition of contrasting Zen and Pure Land as if they are opposites. This is understandable since Pure Land texts criticize "self-power" forms of Buddhism such as Zen. Yet, both are developments of Mahayana Buddhism. That means that despite the surface difference there must be an underlying similarity between Zen Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism. Explain that similarity and show how they both are developments of Mahayana Buddhism.
