• Explain Mills' criticism of the official historical narrative of the triumph of modern liberalism and individualism, as well as his criticisms of the Marxist critique of mainstream liberalism.
• Mills' anti-racist aspiration does not reject liberalism all together, but involves producing a "revisionist narrative of modernity" and "a different perspective on liberalism" (p. 6). On this point, compare and contrast Mills to West (remember, the latter proposes retrieving the notion of "culture" and a "love ethic," while attacking both liberalism and conservatism). Whose proposal do you find more promising/ interesting/ intriguing, and why (give a thoughtful reason)?
