Overview

The Board of Directors of the Health Care System is thinking of expanding services to include a home health agency in the community. The Health Care System is experiencing an increase in older adult patients and also has a problem with a high readmission rate within 30 days of discharge for Medicare patients. The Board of Directors has charged the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to ask you, their health care consultant, to help determine whether or not to develop this service. You must analyze overall healthcare trends, population trends, disease trends, local trends and competitors, utilization of services, and other factors to determine whether or not to recommend opening a home care service. The recommendation will include specific services provided, staff required, financial concerns, and a plan to build patient referrals.

*Leila Chen, Senior Operations Consultant at Beacon and Associates Consulting Firm

Leila is in her late 40s. Leila has diverse experience as a Health Care Administrator, and most recently the Chief Executive Officer of a Pharmaceutical company. Leila is passionate about new business opportunities and is excited to help the student with this project.

*Amit Patel, Marketing Director of Bright Road Health Care Systems

Amit is a quirky, creative, and intelligent young man. In his early 30s, Amit has been the Marketing Director at Bright Road for about 3 years. Prior to joining the team, Amit founded a startup marketing firm with his friends from graduate school. Amit was the research specialist, and his friends were the creative component. The firm was extremely successful, but Amit wanted to spend more time with his family so he sold his partnership and came to work for Bright Road where he could work normal hours and enjoy a work/life balance.

*Ken Bloom, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Bright Road Health Care System

Ken is in his mid-40s and has held various positions of nursing departments in both small and large medical facilities. At Bright Road, he began his career in an urgent care facility, where he saw a lot of elderly patients. He had a natural inclination for assisting elderly patients, so he shifted his focus to geriatric care and took a position at one of the largest hospitals in the system as a geriatric care nurse.

He then moved on to be the CNO providing overall leadership and management for patient care services. He's sympathetic, kind, and passionate about a nurse's ability to positively impact patient care.

*Kimberly O'Neill, Chief Financial Officer of Bright Road Health Care System

Kimberly is an African American woman in her late 50s. She joined one of the organizations that now form Banner Health as an internal auditor. Due to her drive and her seemingly innate analytical skills, she was quickly promoted to Vice President of Finance for the health care system. Kimberly was chosen for this project because of her ability to present financial information in a manner in which people without a financial background can clearly understand.

*Tiffany Halpert, Chief of Medical Staff of Bright Road Health Care System, Board Member

Tiffany is a physician in her early 40's. She is bright, funny, and very direct. Her current responsibilities include care management and organizational performance for the Health Care System including medical management, care coordination, case management, and management engineering. She is an internist, just beginning her term as Chief of Medical staff.
