Explain how the protest related to the city describe

My introduction to the assignment:

One of my goals in this class is to help you apply what you read to what is going on in cities around you. David Harvey discusses the "Right to the City." In fact, he declares that if there is to be true equality, then that equality--aka democracy--will need to take the form of the public's ability to shape the city to its needs.

When people feel their society isn't meeting their needs, when they feel left out of progress or oppressed, they often protest. Where these protests take place is important, because they are often in the city. Where people decide to fight for their rights are usually symbolic spaces, a city center by a government building, for example.

For this presentation, I'd like you to choose a protest and describe the issues raised by the protestors, where the protest took place, and why that location is significant.

The assignment:

1. Select a protest. This can be in any city across the world. It can be contemporary or historic. Some examples include Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, Women's March, Black Lives Matter, and any of the innumerable protests in Hong Kong, South America, Central America, South East Asia, and Europe (among others).

2. Find articles about the event. Do your research and make sure you understand the who, what, why, and how about the event. Make sure your research sources are appropriate. No Fox News, CBS reports, or blogs. Your information needs to come from investigative journalism--i.e. authors who researched their material before they wrote it. You should include the author, title, journal, date, and a link to the article.

Create a presentation and post it in this forum. Please post directly into the dialog box (no need to create a PPT or Prezi). Include the following below:

--Introduce your topic. Include a reference to your article.

--Include a picture of the protest.

--Provide some background on the protest. Why did the organizers put the protest together? When did it happen? What are they protesting? Where did it take place? What were the protestors asking for?

--Explain how the protest related to the city. Describe exactly how the protestors used the city. Where did it take place specifically in the city? Is there something symbolic about this location? Did the selection of place help to project a certain image to the rest of the world? What role did the media play? ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS!

--Do you see any parallels between the protest and points Harvey made in his essay for this week? Please include a quote from the reading (with p. #).

--What do you think about protest? What do you think about the right to the city as a democratic right? How do you view citizenship and civic engagement?
