The idea of the presentation layer is to stand for information to the communicating application entities in a way that preserves the meaning whereas solving syntax differences. Syntax differences are resolved through encoding application data in a standard abstract notation that is valid during the network. Therefore, data representation differences (for example: ASCII or EBCDIC), file format differences (for example: IBM format or DEC format) or data structure differences are all solved using a standard notation. Data formatting and transformation may comprise data compression, encryption and so on.
