Explain hierarchical directory structures for storing data

Assignment Scenario: I mostly use hierarchical directory structures for storing data.  For example, music files are stored by the artist/album.  The video files I have are stored by genre/show/season. One thing I feel strongly about is not using spaces in filenames, even though modern operating systems can accommodate it.  I will replace spaces with underscores or dashes.  The operating system is not the only software that may need to interact with your files.  And while it might be nice if all software parsed filenames correctly, I have found that's not the case. One instance where I use a different storage technique would be photos.  Images are listed chronologically, but can also be organized by tags or collections.  This allows for easier searching in a large set of files.

Question: Explain why you like the idea in the scenario provided above.
