Explain Brass and Bronze.

Brass-

It is an alloy of copper and zinc with 60 percent copper and 40 percent zinc. Its electrical resistivity of Brass is 7.0 X 10-8 ohm-m that is higher than the copper resistivity. This is ductile and can be drawn in different shapes. This melts at 8900C. Its exact gravity is 3.3. This has got an excellent corrosion resistance. This has got good mechanical properties.

It is used as a structural and also current carrying material in power switches, sockets, plugs, lamp holders, knife switches, fuse holders, wave guide elements, sliding contacts for starters and rheostats, brazing reason, jewellery and utencils.

Bronze:

It is alloy of copper and tin. This alloy is very brittle and hard. Its corrosion resistance is better than brass. Bronze is ductile and can be drawn in various shapes. In bronzes, that are used as electrical conductor, the content of tin and the other metal is usually low as compared to the bronzes, that are used for mechanical applications.

Bronze is used for making structural components for equipments. This is also used for making current carrying springs knife switches, , sliding contacts, bearings, turbine blading and marine work etc.
