Assignment:
This assignment is a key assessment of your special education knowledge. You will need to place it in your SL&L portfolio
Profiles of the 5 Areas of ABS:
You will be completing a project that explains and explores the 5 areas of the ABS degree:
"A teacher holding the Academic and Behavioral Strategist license is authorized to provide evaluation and specially designed instruction to eligible children and youth with disabilities from kindergarten through age 21 who have a range of mild to moderate needs in the areas of academic, behavior, social/emotional, communication, and functional performance." *Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing & Standards Board (PELSB)
For this project you will be explaining the five areas of the Academic Behavioral Strategist program. Think of it as explaining to someone what an ABS licensed teacher does. The five areas you will be working on with your students include: Need Assignment Help?
1. Academic
2. Behavior
3. Social/Emotional
4. Communication
5. Functional Performance
Your license includes working with children who have mild to moderate disabilities. The moderate to severe range is what you will add at the graduate level if you so choose to. Use your resources to help you describe and explain the five areas of need. You can search a further explanation from the Professional Educator Licensing & Standards Board (PELSB), and any other credible on-line source that you find. You may want to include a history of when the license became available and what was the thought rational behind its creation. Prior to the ABS license, special education teachers were licensed in individual disability areas only. What may be the advantage of this multi-categorical license as opposed to individually licensed areas?
How you will present the information is up to you. If you would like to design a brochure, a Prezi, a powerpoint, a Powtoon, etc. is entirely your choice.
The project score will be based on:
- Explanation of the Academic Behavioral Strategist teacher's role
- Description of the Five Areas of Need
- Aesthetically appealing presentation
- Sources cited
- Free of grammatical and spelling errors
Some of your peers have allowed me to share their assignments for examples.
