The rise of Al can be seen as a social movement because it is not just a new technology; it is changing how we work, learn, and even imagine the future. For women in STEM, that comes with a specific set of responsibilities and risks. Women are still underrepresented in many STEM fields and especially in Al- related roles, which means Al systems are often designed and trained from a limited perspective. When those systems are then used in hiring, education, healthcare, or even generating images of "scientists," they tend to repeat the old patterns: more men shown as experts, more women pushed to the margins. In that sense, the Al movement can challenge human values like fairness and inclusion by quietly baking historical bias into "smart" tools.
In my women-in-STEM project, I focused on how creative works shape who feels like they belong in technical fields. That same lesson applies directly to Al. Studies show that when Al image generators are asked to "draw a scientist" or "show an engineer,' they overwhelmingly produce male images, which reinforces the idea that science and technology are male domains. At the same time, campaigns and initiatives led by women, such as Women in Al Ethics and UNESCO's Women4Ethical Al, are using reports, events, and media to argue that ethical Al must be diverse and must protect human dignity, especially for women and other marginalized groups. This reshapes what I learned about empathy and ethics in my project: it is not enough to have women "there" in STEM; their voices need to be part of deciding how powerful technologies like Al are built and used.
When I connect women in STEM to sustainability and Al, I see a shared responsibility at the individual level. Al systems use large amounts of data and computing power, which has social and environmental costs, and those costs often fall hardest on communities that already have fewer resources. As a woman in STEM, part of the responsibility is to stay informed about how these tools work, to question the outputs instead of treating them as neutral, and to notice when a system seems to leave certain groups out. Another part is cultural: speaking up in classrooms, workplaces, and online spaces when Al-generated content erases women or shows them only in limited, stereotypical roles. One person cannot control the entire direction of Al, but one person can mentor others, share more accurate and diverse stories about women in STEM, choose ethical tools, and support policies and projects that put human connection, fairness, and sustainability at the center of technological change.
