Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence (EI) can be described as being aware of one's own emotions and those of others, and of how they relate to one another (Carlucci & Fitzpatrick, 2024). The main domains of this concept include self-awareness, self-regulation, relationship management, empathy, and social skills. EI played an essential role during the design and planning phases of my DNP project. During the planning phase, I practiced self-awareness by reflecting on my assumptions about staff readiness and knowledge of postpartum depression (PDD). I noticed that some staff members expressed resistance to adding the screening tool to their workload. Rather than being defensive, I applied self-regulation to remain calm and open to their questions, which helped create a safe environment for discussion. I practiced empathy by actively listening to staff concerns about time constraints and workflow integration, and I provided a remedy by collaboratively designing practical, brief education sessions.
In planning and designing my DNP project, I also applied social awareness by recognizing that increasing staff knowledge and confidence with the PHQ-9 would require engagement rather than compliance. Relationship management also played a foundational role during the planning phase of my DNP project. I applied relationship-management skills to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among nursing staff, psychiatric providers, and leadership. I was transparent in communicating the purpose of the project, which helped to align the intervention with the hospital's mission. This aligns with a study by Gransberry (2021) that emphasizes that emotionally intelligent leadership strengthens communication, collaboration, and conflict management.
Applying the domains of EI during the planning and design phase was important because it allowed me to anticipate potential barriers, including resistance to using the screening tool confidently with postpartum patients. Applying EI during the planning phase was vital because this stage helped establish trust and buy-in, which greatly influence the success of project implementation. Without empathy and effective communication, staff may have a negative perception of structured screening education. However, when leaders model emotional awareness and collaborative problem-solving, engagement increases (Danquah, 2022).
In the future, I plan to cultivate my EI by seeking structured feedback, building resilience, and continuing education focused on transformational and emotionally intelligent leadership. Strengthening these competencies will enable me to lead future quality improvement initiatives effectively, promote the adoption of evidence-based practice, and foster healthy work environments.
